Fine Arts Department

It is the strength beyond techniques and knowledge to master your expressions through arts.

In our curriculums, students can experience all four courses (oil painting, Japanese painting, printmaking, and sculpture) during the first year. By expressing a broad range of expressions, students can find their own artistic methods which are suitable to them. From the second year onward, in their selected courses, each student can master specialized techniques and methods, and explore new artistic fields such as computer arts. For four years here, students not only make a profound study of techniques, but also ask about what and how they should express themselves in their own ways. They construct solid bases for people who can express themselves.

Oil Painting Course

This is the place where you find and polish your own expressions after studying all the theories and techniques of oil painting.

Students obtain basic knowledge in the lecture class such as “Introduction of Painting”. They also improve their skills of oil painting in practice. After studying sketching and image expressions fully, they master specific skills in three fields such as “representational paintings”, “abstract paintings”, and “paintings adopted new materials and expressions”.
Improving drawing techniques and polishing their senses and expressing methods, they push forward their own works for graduation projects.

Japanese Painting Course

With respects for traditions and innovations, students will grow with a critical eye.

Students learn basics of two and three dimensional expressions while taking the other filed such as oil painting into their views, and they study about thoughts and expressions exclusive to the Japanese Paintings, as well as conceptualization, how to deal with painting materials, and techniques from basics. Students aim to create new expressions broadening the possibilities of the Japanese Painting. They exhibit their art works to the art exhibitions and contests in and out or the university. In this way, they improve their creativity and expressive methodologies through criticisms and opinions of their fellow students.

Printmaking Course

After studying a board range of printmaking techniques, students get their abilities of using them freely.

Firstly, students learn expressions and how to form concepts in both two and three-dimensional areas. In practical training courses, students understand the characteristics of printmaking by learning the history of printmaking and experiencing various kinds of materials. In the second year onwards, students are divided into four categories such as wood-block printing, lithography, copperplate, and screen-printing and they deepen their understandings of the knowledge and skills of tools as well as the characteristics of expressions. This program seeks to foster talented people who aim to create art works unrestricted by preconceived notions.

Sculpture Course

Students study materials, and polish their skills.  The power of concepts and composition grew by leaps and bounds.

The course consists of the first part (stone, wood, metal, and molding) and the second part (comprehensive materials). After studying the basics, in the first part, students are trained to have the power of sketching, composition and techniques through modeling (clay and casting) and carving (stone and wood). In the second part, students are trained to have the power of conception and composition theoretically connected to a broad range of materials (cloth, light, water, sound, and air) and spaces, images, and notion. The purpose of this course is to create three-dimensional artworks utilizing innovative concepts and flexible ideas.

Design Department

For design responding to society, five specialized fields were born.

Today, a role of design is becoming more and more important in society by the day. In diverse fields, designers who have the powers of proposals with planning and ideas are in demand. The Design Department provides students with five specialized fields to foster professional designers who can play active parts in the present age. Students develop the highly sophisticated powers of expressions, and they study various roles which design plays in industry and everyday life. They obtain the powers of playing key roles as designers to pull projects.

Graphic Design Course

The filed of graphic design is the ABC of the design language.

Students master design methods from basic of layout to typography and pictogram regarding design of advertisements, magazines, and package. In addition, students nurture abilities of producing design of the next generation by studying marketing communication and function of design which is relevant to society.

Visual Arts Course

Powers to draw creative concepts, and powers to send out creative expressions.

Students pursue creative expressions of visual arts with a focus on illustration. They study two and three dimensional expressions, and methods of printmaking. They apply their knowledge and skills to publishing medium such as advertising, picture books and magazines and develop them. Students foster knowledge of each media and conduct practical studies to present their ideas and expressions to clients.

Information Design Course

In a genre of design which is evolving at an every moment, students strive to have powers of ideas and skills.

Students improve their comprehensive design abilities in the contemporary digital communications out of three fields such as Digital Design, Web Design, and Digital Contents. While experiencing a wide range of media creation such as planning and creating of websites, games, moving images, 3DCG, students strive to be creators who are active in each field.

Space Design Course

When students begin to understand people’s lives, they want to design life space.

Students learn a wide range of expressive skills of space design from interior to display in a life space, social activities and commercial facilities. While deepening knowledge of various kinds of constructions and human lives, they obtain necessary basics necessary for space design such as sketching, flat design, CAD, models, lighting, and furniture design. Students make planning documents and models so that they can cultivate the power to propose their ideas in the society.

Product Design Course

The design is beautiful. Is the design comfortable?

Product design deals with various products necessary for comfortable life such as furniture, miscellaneous goods used by people in daily life, home electric appliances, automobiles, and welfare machines. Our curriculum is composed so that students can totally experience from planning to merchandising. Students experience developing process in both sides of designers and users as well as planning and expressive techniques. Students master the power of design that is really loved by users.

Crafts Department

We produce an encounter with materials, and support individuality and creativity.

In the first year, students participate in the four courses and experience basic techniques. They find materials to express themselves from materials such as metal, clay, glass and fiber for their own expressions. In the second year, they are divided into each specific field, and they seek for their own expressive methods. Our most sophisticated and extensive facilities enable students to make more individualistic and more creative work. Students learn useful skills such as methods of presenting their work and techniques of appealing to people.

Metal Work Course

Students enjoy change of metal as the staff of creation.

Students study three methods such as “casting” that is melting metal poured into mold to shape it, “hammering” that is forging metal to make shape it and “carving” that is engraving for decoration. Metal shows various kinds of shapes and expressions and transforms into different material according to its characteristics and artists’ intention. Let us seek for possibilities of metal work and stretch our “creative wings”.

Ceramic Course

Students will become persons who can predict characteristics of clay, fire, and change of material.

With the faculty who are active on the front-line as ceramic artists, students master basic techniques through making artwork. Students understand characters of clay by studying “hand twist”, “potter’s wheel”, and “plaster mold” at first. Students thoroughly tackle slip decoration, on-graze decoration, study of graze and firing by kiln.

Glass Course

Understanding variable characters, we enjoy a minute change of glass.

Creative methods are consists of glass work (hot work) and glass cutting (cold work). Students experience glass casting and glass blowing techniques and understand characters of glass and acquire basic skills of cutting glass. Students pursue the possibilities of creation by obtaining high attainment of their techniques in each method.

Textile / Dyeing Course

Students dye and weave colors to become creators who are active in the world.

In the field of “Textile”, students pursue textile design, assuming that flat cloth becomes three-dimensional. In the “Dying and Weaving” course, students study materials, techniques and processes based on the traditional dying and weaving. Acquiring specialized knowledge and techniques in practical courses makes it possible to understand the future of textile and tradition of fiber arts in broader perspectives and foster creative people who can talk to the world.

Architecture Department

Students aspire to be architects of high caliber, who can design affluent lives and new spaces of people.

In order to set forth into the world as architectural designers of high caliber, students are required to master basic techniques of design, knowledge of structure to polish the power of architectural design based on bold and freewheeling ideas. The Department fosters architectural designers who can change the world while training their presentation ability to replace their artistic sparks with rational thoughts.

Architectural Field

Students study for humans and architecture.

Here, students aspire to be architects who can create comfortable environments. Students search for architecture under the bold and free wheeling ideas by making full use of the extensive art university. While learning basic skills, students proceed to tasks for residence, apartment houses, offices, commercial facilities and public architecture from a viewpoint of substantial environments for people.

Environmental Design Field

Students learn about diverse spatial creation from housing to landscape planning.

We foster urban designers who create landscape harmonizing cities and nature. Studying environmental design from three directions such as landscape gardening, regions, and cities, students tackle landscape design such as private housing, gardens, parks, green and cities. Students learn about observation of cities and nature and their expressions while emphasizing the field studies.

Photography Department

Believing possibilities of photography we foster sensibility to face one’s own photography.

In the Photography Department, keeping up with the fields of photography which is continuously expanding nowadays, it is our purpose to make each student become an expert who can keep an eye on the course after graduation. After acquiring basic techniques and knowledge to correspond to diverse photographic expressions, students proceed to creative activities according to their individual characters and artistic sensitivities. The Photography Department is characterized by the fact that its faculty and students work together to look for creative directions to draw out students’ latent abilities to the full.

Fine Art

Students explore potentials of photographic expressions freely with perfect ease.

Students pursue photography as fine arts in this field. We provide students with supports for free and creative activities so that they can establish photographic expressions as artists by using their sensitivities and techniques. Their activities are expanding and developing freely, and they are producing photographic albums on their own, opening web galleries, and making videos, media arts, and installation of space beyond a frame of photography.

Professional

Potentials of photographers lie in the three fields.

Students master techniques to be active professionals. In “Commercial Photo” class, students acquire photographic techniques to plays an active part in the industry of advertisements through practical course work. In “Studio Portrait” class, students learn portrait techniques using at commercial photography studios such as “retouch”. In “Photojournalism” class, students learn journalistic views while mastering photographic techniques to send messages to the media.
